Summary

A Sooke logging operator who on the Sunday brought two young Victoria hunters out of the bush country called for hunters to be licensed and tested in the way drivers are. The two youths had gone hunting in the bush country and failed to meet their grandfather at 4 p.m. as arranged; the rescuer heard shots, fired in answer, and found the boys on a logging road. The boys had shot a deer and dressed it out. He argued that a hunter should have to be 16 years of age and pass a test of some kind before being granted a hunting licence, saying a man with a gun has as much responsibility to others as a man at the wheel of a car.

VERIFIED AGAINST THE PAGE SCAN (2026-08-06). The rescuer is Ted Shaw (printed as "Mr. Shaw"), a Sooke logging operator — confirmed as the main speaker quoted throughout the article ("Right now, said [Ted] Shaw"; "Mr. Shaw said yesterday"). The OCR ambiguity arose because three names appear in the article: Shaw is the rescuer and quoted speaker; Mr. Yates is the boys' grandfather (from Victoria, not a local searcher); and Tetreault is a Sooke resident who was flagged down by Yates on the logging road. Colwood RCMP also helped but did not learn the boys' address before Shaw found them. The article belongs in the pre-formation record as an early example of civilian rescue in the Sooke woods and of the hunter-licensing argument that recurs in later coverage.
