Summary

A search involving an RCMP helicopter, a tracking dog and a dogmaster was called off shortly after noon on the Wednesday when a missing hunter was reported safely home. The search had been organized after the man failed to show up for a rendezvous on the Tuesday evening. Members of the Sooke search and rescue team began scouring an area on the Tuesday night. The hunter, who was tired and hungry but otherwise uninjured, said in a telephone interview on the Wednesday afternoon that he got lost shortly after dark and fired a couple of shots; he did not get much sleep, and in the morning heard cow bells and began heading for the sound.

Archivist's note

The second archive article to name a "Sooke search and rescue team", ten months after the November 1979 Victoria Times piece and three years before the 1983 organising date given in the CRD's own history text. Subject and location were confirmed against the scan on 2026-07-30: David Sylvester, 28, lost near Shields Lake. Shields Lake appears again in the April 2012 rescue catalogued here - the same water thirty-two years apart.
