Summary

A 22-year-old Alberta man died following a hiking accident on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. The man, from St. Albert, suffered injuries after falling about 15 metres from a cliff near Bear Beach on the Saturday, one of the trail sites designated for beach camping. He had been hiking on the 47-kilometre trail with a group of people from both Victoria and Alberta, including his grandfather. A B.C. Ambulance helicopter arrived ahead of a Sooke Search-and-Rescue crew and airlifted the man to Victoria General Hospital, where he died on the Sunday. His name was not released because relatives were still being contacted, and Sooke RCMP Cpl. Garth Cunningham commented on the case.

Archivist's note

The first fatality on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail recorded in this archive. Note that the team is still called "Sooke Search and Rescue" in August 2004, ten months after Bylaw 3101 was adopted - further evidence that the public name changed gradually rather than at a single date.
