Hiker praises emergency teams

reader letter. Times Colonist, p. 9, 2 July 2007 ref-only

Summary

A letter from a hiker who was rescued after a fall close to the Bear Beach section of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, observing that the place where the couple required rescue is about the simplest and best-marked portion of the trail. The writer says that after a couple of hours, individuals from the B.C. Ambulance Service at Port Renfrew, the Juan de Fuca ground search and rescue and Sooke Search [and Rescue] attended, and argues that publicity about rescues could lead to more bridges and more [safety infrastructure] on the West Coast and Juan de Fuca Marine trails.

Archivist's note

TABLE_OF_CONTENTS.md flags this file because it carries both team names in one article. Read closely, it does more than that: in July 2007 a member of the public writing to the newspaper distinguishes "the Juan de Fuca ground search and rescue" from "Sooke Search [and Rescue]" as separate responding bodies. Whether that reflects two organizations still existing in 2007 or simply a writer using both names loosely cannot be settled from this document.

Shared page: the scan is a full newspaper page whose other content is unrelated. The summary describes only this article. Letters page with several letters interleaved in the OCR. The writer's name was not legible and is not asserted. The article's reference to a "75-" kilometre figure appears in the OCR without its unit and may refer to the West Coast Trail rather than the Juan de Fuca trail; it is omitted rather than guessed.
