Summary
Project Lifesaver Greater Victoria announced it was expanding the Project Lifesaver program to Sooke, thanks to the involvement of the Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue group. Designed to track and rescue those with cognitive conditions who tend to wander, the service answers a need for protecting people at risk of wandering, including those with Alzheimer's, autism, Down syndrome and dementia; clients wear a wrist-watch sized radio transmitter on wrist or ankle that constantly emits a signal trackable even into densely wooded areas, marsh, concrete structures or buildings constructed with steel. When a person goes missing, caregivers notify locally trained agencies who are dispatched to the area; the average rescue time remains around 30 minutes. Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue was pleased to offer the service to the citizens of the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area and the District of Sooke, and there are no fees charged for this service or any other service performed by the team.
