Summary

A letter to the editor objecting that a notification about a Capital Regional District building project was somewhat misleading, and asking whether anyone had been consulted. The letter sets out the project: three lots in the business park at 7450 Butler Rd. cost $400,000, and the anticipated cost to build the 4,500-square-foot, rancher-style office building was approximately $900,000. "If there is enough money is left over, the hope is to build Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue its own garage and command centre." Because the director was borrowing the money internally from the CRD's office facilities capital reserve fund and no tax increase was anticipated, there was no requirement to go to electors for approval to borrow; annual building costs would be equal to or less than the $117,000 in rent and $17,000 in utilities electoral area taxpayers were then paying for rental offices in Sooke.

Archivist's note

The only document in the archive that records a plan to build Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue a purpose-built garage and command centre. It was never built; the team instead took the upper floor of the former East Sooke fire hall in 2016. The Times Colonist news story on the same project, 2013-01-19 A3, is also held here and does not mention search and rescue at all.
