SAR group issues reminder that Juan de Fuca trail is closed after overdue hiker found

A local search and rescue group says an overdue hiker is safe after being located on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, which is currently closed by BC Parks. Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue (JDFSAR) was called to the trail around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a missing hiker. Teams were able to locate the hiker, who was safe. "As a reminder, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail remains closed until repairs are completed," said the search and rescue group. "There are still significant hazards along the trail, and wildlife in the area has become less accustomed to human activity which can increase the risk of dangerous encounters." Most sections of the Juan de Fuca trail have been closed since fall 2024 due to storm damage. Five campsites have been closed since then, and the province is working on repairing damaged bridges, unstable slopes, washouts, and other blocked sections. An update on the trail is expected in spring 2026 according to BC Parks' latest update in October. JDFSAR credits the Sooke RCMP, BC Conservation Officer Service, BC Parks, and RCMSAR Station 37 with helping with the search.
