Summary

A hiker had to be carried off the Juan de Fuca Trail on the Monday with a serious leg injury. Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue was called to the Mystic Beach area of the trail at about 1:30 p.m., where a day hiker had suffered a lower leg injury. Search and rescue crews and paramedics from the B.C. Emergency Health Services provided on-site patient care before transporting the hiker on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance. Parts of the 47-kilometre Juan de Fuca Trail have been closed following severe storms in late 2024 and early 2025 that washed out multiple sections, downed trees and destabilized slopes, leaving many areas unsafe and impassable. The trail and most of its campsites remained closed for the 2025 summer season, although campsites at Mystic Beach and East Sombrio remain open, and the trail is open at the China Beach trail head to Mystic Beach, including the suspension bridge, but is closed at McVicar Creek.
