Summary

The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail was expected to reopen that summer, with an opening date to be announced in mid-May. The Ministry of Environment and Parks said hikers and back-country campers would have access to the full trail; repairs were costing an estimated $950,000, with most of the funding coming from the federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program. The 47-kilometre trail, which runs from China Beach to Botanical Beach, was closed after being damaged by severe storms in late 2024 and early 2025. During the storms many trail sections were washed out, slopes were destabilized and trees came down. To repair bridges, B.C. Parks was flying in materials to the affected seven sections, which range from those crossing smaller creeks to larger bridges, and crews were also working on more than 800 metres of boardwalk and multiple staircases that are in steep, unstable terrain. Victoria Clarke of Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue said she is happy to hear that the trail will reopen soon.

The two reopening articles, eight days apart, are the archive's most recent record and they close the storm-damage thread that runs through the 2026 April rescue coverage. Victoria Clarke's quotation - "I know that a lot of people are really anxious to see the trail open" - is the team's last recorded public statement in this collection.
